Unique handcrafted jewelry by Joy Cutler. One of a kind and limited production pieces in sterling silver, brass and gold inspired by natural geological formations. Joy Cutler is a jewelry artist living in NYC. In 1981 she received a BFA in ceramics from The California College of Art in Oakland, CA. and in 1986 she received an MA in interdisciplinary art from San Francisco State University. Following her wandering muse she re-located to Berlin in 1989 where she wrote scripts for theater, film and radio and was a co-creator of the theater company, Out To Lunch. In 1998 she returned to the U.S. and the visual arts studying jewelry design at Studio Jewelers in NYC. She works almost exclusively in wax - its pliability gives her a connection to her former work in clay - which she then casts in either sterling silver or gold. Currently she studies jewelry wax techniques and design with Fred de Vos. Her work is shown in San Francisco and NYC, among others cities. ''I regard my designs as small sculptures that need to be worn on the body in order for the piece to be complete and fully realized. Many of my pieces are one of a kind because I see them as individual works that are intended for a specific person. It's just a matter of time before my jewelry and the person it was meant for find one another. Many of my ideas are derived from the four elements of Nature: fire, earth, air and water. I want the complex and active textures in my pieces to reflect the surface designs I've seen created through natural occurrences. Everything is in a state of transformation, nothing is static - lava flowing, wind and water eroding rock, air corroding metal, the shifting sea floor, the buckling and cracking of the earth’s surface. I also find inspiration in the weaving and architectural designs created by insects and animals in their hives, nests and burrows. I’m concerned with asymmetry and ''imperfection'', but I also strive to give my designs a sense of balance and liveliness.'' Pet Jewelry History. Several years ago I met a lovely young mixed breed pup at a NYC animal shelter and brought her home. Burke's been a wonderful buddy and at times a terrific therapist and as it turns out, a source of creative inspiration. Noticing I'm a jeweler she coerced me to design an ID tag for her. I made her a bone-shaped tag in sterling silver with garnet stones. She looked stunning. I started making more ID tags for the dogs of friends and neighbors and eventually added dog and cat key chains, dog collars, and a variety of pet charms to my new line which are now sold in pet boutiques and stores around the country. It's been a particularly entertaining aspect of jewelry making for me and it's always nice seeing a well-adorned dog on the street.
